ACM SIGMM Rising Star Award 2020

The winner of the SIGMM Rising Star for 2020 is Liqiang Nie from Shandong University.

Dr. Nie is currently a professor with Shandong University and the Dean with the Shandong AI institute. He received his B.Eng. and Ph.D. degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2009 and National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2013, respectively. After PhD, Dr. Nie continued his research in NUS as a research follow for three years. During his PhD and as a research fellow, he was mentored by Prof. Tat-Seng Chua.

His research interests lie primarily in multimedia content analysis and search, especially in data-driven multimodal learning and knowledge-guided multimodal reasoning. Dr. Nie has co-/authored more than 150 papers...

SIGMM Thanks Thomas Plagemann for services as Editor-in-Chief of Multimedia Systems Journal and welcomes the appointment of Changsheng Xu

After 13 years in the role, Thomas Plagemann of the University of Oslo, Norway, has just stepped down as Editor-in-Chief of the Multimedia Systems Journal (Springer). Thomas has provided clear and strong leadership and guidance for the journal over more than a dozen years and overseen what is now a rapid turnaround between submission and publication, the introduction of best reviewer and associate editor awards and of course a back catalogue of great papers published across the years.

SIGMM Announces New Award for "SIGMM Test of Time Paper Award"

SIGMM has just received approval from the ACM Awards Committee, for a new award called the SIGMM Test of TIme Paper Award. This will be an annual award recognising the authors of a paper published either 10, 11 or 12 years previously at a SIGMM sponsored or co-sponsored conference, which has had the most impact and influence on the field of multimedia in terms of research, development, product, or ideas.  

The establishment of an award which is recognised by ACM is a very thorough and rigorous process. The proposal was first approved by the SIGMM Executive, then it went for assessment by the ACM office before being submitted for approval by the ACM SIG Governance Board and then finally for approval by the the ACM...

SIGMM's funded initiatives 2020

In late 2019 the SIGMM Executive invited applications for funding for new initiatives, submitted by SIGMM members. These initiatives were to focus on one, or more, of the following:

    - building on SIGMM’s excellence and strengths;
    - nurturing new talent in the SIGMM community;
    - addressing weakness(es) in the SIGMM community and in SIGMM activities

This was our third year for issuing this call and we received a very strong response from the SIGMM community. Submissions were evaluated and assessed by the SIGMM Executive and the following awards have been made:
