<title>Special Issue on User-Centered Multimedia - Call for papers</title>
<link>http://sigmm.utdallas.edu/Members/susanne/MMSJ_UserCenteredMM_2005</link>
<description>
Reaching the individual user with multimedia systems and applications involves far more than merely considering technical user context such as system and network parameters for content delivery, user interfaces, and interaction. In order to provide appealing multimedia experiences, the users' preferences and information needs, their capabilities and interests not only have to be taken into account, but in fact must become the focal point at all layers of multimedia system design. The individual background and context of different users inevitably calls for individual views onto media and user-centered meta data; content retrieval, summarization, and ranking must focus on satisfying the individual user's interest and information need; composition, delivery, and presentation of multimedia content need to be designed to meet user preferences and situation, background and interest, abilities and inabilities, device capabilities, as well as network characteristics; interactive multimedia user interfaces must exploit multimodality to address the current user's (mobile) situation and context; authoring environments must enable user-aware capturing, authoring, and annotation of multimedia content.

The theme of this special issue is to explore and bring together a multi-faceted view on user-centered multimedia system and application design. We seek contributions that address key challenges in the incorporation of the user in the design and usage of future multimedia applications and multimedia systems.

<description>
The overall objective of the workshop is to investigate the current practice of multimedia metadata for contextualized ubiquitous, accessible and interoperable services on a higher semantic level, e.g. in collaborative working environments. We concentrate on the development of services and test beds for MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 based services, but also contributions related to other multimedia metadata description standards are welcome. The majority of multimedia metadata description standards in use is based on XML. This has important consequences on the development of services and test beds on the database, the infrastructure and the interface level. We are encouraging especially contributions from interested research groups from the database, the web service and the web 2.0 area.

<description>
It is almost 10 years since Intelligent Multimedia Presentation Systems (IMMPS) were formalised in a Standard Reference Model. Even then, the role of knowledge bases and reasoning was recognised as a vital element for the adaptive and automated production of multimedia presentations. This decade has seen the rise of the Web as a platform for multimedia delivery and of Semantic Web research to enable the expression and manipulation of knowledge over the Web. The goal of this workshop is to explore how Semantic Web technologies can be applied to Multimedia Presentation Systems in order to support Internet-based delivery of user and context personalised, rich media-based Web presentations and new innovative types of online service.

<title>Sixth International Workshop on Multimedia Data Mining &quot;Mining Integrated Media and Complex Data&quot;</title>
<link>http://sigmm.utdallas.edu/Members/susanne/MDM2005</link>
<description>
This year the Multimedia Data Mining workshop will bring together a diverse group of academics and industry practitioners in integrated state-of-art analysis of digital media content, multimedia database systems and multimedia data streams. The workshop will address issues specifically related to mining information from multi-modality, multi-source, multi-format data in an integrated way. This workshop also focuses on semantic understanding of multimedia content, and knowledge discovery in other complex data. Many analysis domains collect data from several sources, including static databases, streaming data, web pages, or conditionally collected data. Data appear in multiple forms, including structured, numeric, free text, video, image, speech, or combinations of several types. Analysis in these domains requires combining of techniques and integrating methods.

<description>
NOSSDAV 2010 is the 20th anniversary of SIGMM's leading workshop on
network and operating systems support for digital audio and video.
NOSSDAV encourages experimental research based on real systems and
real data sets. Public availability of the source code and data sets
discussed in papers presented at NOSSDAV is highly encouraged. For
NOSSDAV 2010, we will accept papers on a broad ranges of topics
related to the transmission and presentation of digital audio/video
objects. We are particularly interested in soliciting articles that
discuss systems-level support for distributed social networking, as
well as papers that focus on local dispatching and performance
aspects of multi-core processors. For more information.

<title>Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval (AMR) 2006</title>
<link>http://sigmm.utdallas.edu/Members/susanne/AMR2006</link>
<description>
So far, several approaches have been developed that tackle specific problems of the retrieval process, e.g. feature extraction methods for multimedia data, query languages, problem-specific similarity measures and interactive user interfaces. However, in most cases the user still needs several steps in order to find the searched objects. The main reasons for this are on the one hand, the users' difficulty in specifying their interests in the form of a well defined query (which is partially caused by inappropriate user interfaces), on the other hand, the problem of extracting relevant features from the multimedia objects. Furthermore, user specific interests and the search context are usually neglected when objects are retrieved. To improve today's retrieval tools and thus the overall satisfaction of a user, it is necessary to develop intelligent methods that are able to support the user in the search process, e.g. by providing additional user adapted information about the search results as well as the data collection itself and especially by adapting the retrieval tool to the user's needs and interests.

CALL FOR PAPERS - IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Special Issue on CROSS-LAYER OPTIMIZED WIRELESS MULTIMEDIA COMMUNICATIONS

Submission deadline: May 15, 2006

Recent advances in wireless and mobile communications provide ample opportunities for introducing new services. Supporting multimedia applications and services over wireless networks is challenging due to constraints and heterogeneities such as limited battery power, limited bandwidth, random time-varying fading effect, different protocols and standards, stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. Cross-layer design methodologies hold great promise for addressing these challenges and providing reliable and high-quality end-to-end performance in wireless multimedia communications.

This issue solicits the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of cross-layer optimized wireless multimedia communications and networking. The issue will provide a compelling forum for researchers and practitioners to present their results. Please note that submitted papers must explicitly address cross-layer design issues.

<title>IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Technologies for E-Learning (MTEL)</title>
<link>http://sigmm.utdallas.edu/Members/susanne/MTEL2006</link>
<description>
Due to its potential to make learning easier, more convenient, and more
effective, education is one of the preeminent areas of applications for
multimedia.

With the present amounts of educational data produced, there is a
high demand in techniques and methods capable of handling multimedia
contents adequately. Educational content has to be presented, deployed,
navigated, searched, retrieved, edited, combined, and reused in a
proper way.

Most of these topics involve techniques from artificial intelligence,
computer vision, multimedia, but also human computer interaction,

Due to its potential to make learning easier, more convenient, and more
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
effective, education is one of the preeminent areas of applications for
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
multimedia.
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
With the present amounts of educational data produced, there is a
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
high demand in techniques and methods capable of handling multimedia
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
contents adequately. Educational content has to be presented, deployed,
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
navigated, searched, retrieved, edited, combined, and reused in a
</dc:subject>
<dc:subject>
proper way.

Most of these topics involve techniques from artificial intelligence,
</dc:subject>

computer vision, multimedia, but also human computer interaction,

and psychology. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers

point of view and the human-centered view.
