MMSys 2015

MMSys 2015 Special Session on Augmented Reality

18-20 MARCH, 2015

Portland, Oregon, USA

The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientists to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems.  This special session on augmented reality is an opportunity to foster dialogue and interaction between the MMSys community and other research communities — in particular, researchers whose work lies in the intersection of mixed and augmented reality and multimedia systems.

Augmented reality is an emerging interface concept which is at the confluence of many state-of-the-art technologies and trends, such as camera-equipped smartphones and tablets, head-mounted and wearable displays, wearable cameras, mobile apps and games, global-scale 3D mapping, and visual search. Research in augmented reality deals especially with systems issues and integration of technologies, and often involves innovative system design as well the development of novel system components.  This broad and interdisciplinary field connects many research areas, including computer vision, computer graphics, mobile and embedded systems, displays and optics, and user interface design, and finds application in a broad range of areas, including the entertainment, industry, military and commercial sectors.

Topics of interest for this special session include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative augmented reality applications
  • Experience with augmented reality systems
  • Wearable computing and innovative mobile devices
  • Software architectures for augmented reality systems
  • System-level energy management for mobile augmented reality systems
  • Mobile computing support for augmented reality
  • Display technologies for mixed and augmented reality
  • Networking and distributed systems for augmented reality
  • Mobile and embedded augmented reality systems
  • Mobile augmented reality systems design
  • Real-time systems and resource-constrained implementations
  • 3D modeling and image-based localization
  • Active and passive stereo systems
  • Multimedia compression for visual search and augmented reality
  • Sensor fusion and ego-motion estimation
  • Camera tracking and SLAM
  • User interface designs for augmented reality
  • Security and privacy concerns in augmented reality systems

The papers will be published in the proceedings of MMSys, and authors will present their work in person at MMSys.
