MMSys 2014 Keynote

In Search of Insights

by Professor Dah Ming Chiu, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

We model large and complicated systems, to search for insights that help us understand, improve the design, and manage operational efficiency. In this talk, I will use different examples of our recent work on modeling and analysis of Internet-based content distribution systems (P2P, CDN, streaming, VoD, popularity and fake views analysis) to illustrate how we can gain helpful insights into these systems. I will also use the opportunity to discuss the divide that often exists between analytical modeling and systems research. I am optimistic that the recent trend in big data analytics will lead to more practical research, and improved collaboration between academia and industry. In this regard, I will share our own experiences in collaboration with industry.

Bio

Dah Ming Chiu is a Professor with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, since 2002. He is serving as the Chairman of the Department of Information Engineering, since 2009. Before returning to academia, he worked for several high tech companies of his time: AT&T Bell Labs, DEC and Sun Labs. His most notable contribution was in the development of a simple but insightful model for Internet congestion control in the 1980s. Dah Ming received a BSc degree from Imperial College London, and a PhD degree from Harvard University.

His current research interest is in future Internet developments, and in measurement, modeling and analysis of network-based services, in particular multimedia content distribution systems. He likes to collaborate with industry. His research has been supported (with grants or with data) by various companies, including Microsoft, Cisco, PPLive, Tencent, ASTRI (HK government funded research lab) and Hutchison (a HK telecom company).

Dah Ming has served on the TPC for many networking conferences, and served as an associate editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking from 2006 to 2011. In 2013, he served as general co-chair for ACM Sigcomm, and brought the conference to Hong Kong with a record attendance.
